Consultation | Approved sale mechanism for the sale of National Lottery products

As previously reported, the age limit for playing the National Lottery (and other lottery products) will rise on 18^th October (2021) from sixteen to eighteen.

The Government have now launched a consultation regarding the mechanism for selling these products, whether persons under eighteen can make sales.

In the case of alcohol sales persons under the age of eighteen can in specific circumstances or when specifically authorised by a persons over eighteen make sales of alcohol. The government has recognised that under eighteen workers make up a significant proportion of the retail workshop, especially on Saturdays when sale of lottery tickets can peak. 

The consultation, which can be found here, proposes two options:

1. The minimum age to both buy and sell National Lottery products will increase from 16 to 18 on 1st October 2021 and no additional change is made.
2. Introduce a system, based on the systems used for alcohol sales in England, Wales and Scotland, or tobacco sales in Scotland, whereby a transaction has to be approved should the employee be aged 16 or 17.

The consultation will run until midday on 12^th August 2021.
